DOTS is the best treatment available for tuberculosis…90% of patients put on DOTS get healed whereas in other TB treatments only 30% get healed. Though DOTS is now available free of cost to the patients, in India, which has the highest number of TB cases and TB deaths among all the countries of the world, public awareness of the supremacy of DOTS over other treatments is still poor. The average Indian has a distrust and disliking to avail of medical treatments offered by government sources and prefers to rely upon private health care providers. Private health care providers sadly, are unwilling to refer their TB patients to the DOTS system and prefer to put them on ineffective TB drug regimens. Unless the public at large are made aware of the supremacy of DOTS, unless private health care providers are restrained from prescribing ineffective TB regimens to their patients [banning the sale of TB drugs by chemists could be one sure and easy way of solving this problem] the TB burden in India is bound to rise. realising that the lives of crores and crores of human lives are at stake, before we come to a situation from which there can be no redemption, it is time for every sober minded individual to raise his voice and see that an intelligent and successful war is waged upon these microscopic bacilli which have already destroyed crores and crores of humans.
