Can a person get SSI benefits for having ADHD?
Question by jezuzgirl: Can a person get SSI benefits for having ADHD?
Ok I know I’m probably going to get a lot of dumb answers for this – that’s ok. Here is the info: my son was diagnosed adhd very young. He was put on medications that never helped him. He dropped out of school, became a meth addict and the only way I could get him help was when he finally stole from me and I had him arrested. He went to a treatment center where he came clean, and has fallen a few times in the past three years. He can’t keep a job, he is often homeless, and can’t seem to keep his head on straight. I believe his thinking patterns get him into trouble every time. I have set my own limits and boundries on how far I am willing to go to help him. I will not give him money, and he can no longer stay at my house because he has burned up all his chances of me helping him get on his feet. He constantly makes poor choices that get him where he is now, and doesn’t seem to learn from them. He is going on 21 years old, and his life is a mess. I keep waiting for the day when he gets tired of where his choices land him, but I can’t do this for him, and he isn’t learning. SSI is probably not the answer, but he has no medical coverage to even see a therapist. Is there anyone out there who knows where I can get help for my son?

Ye she can get on SSI for ADHD. I am on it for mental reasons but it is very hard to get accepted. I had to appeal 2 times and had to gather tons of info for it. I was 19 when I got on it and my mom helped me with it. If it can give him some help as far as medications and therapy basically if he wants to get better it can help. For example I got on it and am in college right now working on a degree.Having SSI I have income and can go to my doctor, therapist and get my medications that I must have. When I got on SSI I was doing drugs also but I was able to get help from the SSI. Medicaid which is usually what they give SSI patients will cover rehab and anything else he needs. He has to be willing to change but this may give him some hope and he may get better. I hope it works out. The fact that I had my family helped me because they love me no matter what and you obviously feel the same about your son.
