The purpose of this paper is to explain the causes of teen suicide. This paper will discuss some warning signs of teen suicide and their causes. It doesn’t seem right that a teenager, who has lived for such a short time, would choose to die. Some of the reasons teens commit suicide are because they can’t get over their depression, abuse, or alcohol/drug abuse. Teen suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people aged 15 to 24 and the fourth leading cause of death for persons between the ages of 10 and 14 and it seems to be increasing. According to a 1991 Center for Disease Control and Prevention study, 27% of high school students thought about suicide, 16% had a plan and 8% made an attempt. Suicide Over 32,000 people in the United States die by suicide every year

Although, Boys commit suicide more often than girls do, adolecent girls are twice as likely then boys to experience depression. Teens are vulnerable to depression because hormones change during adolecense, and affect their moods. Depression makes a person focus on the negative side of a situation. It affects a person’s thoughts in a way that it becomes hard for them to see the possibility of a positive outcome. Therefor, their first thought is to end their life since they don’t believe they will ever be happy again. Depression may be caused because of a disturbing event such as a death, a break up, or even failure at school.

There are different types of abuse in which may cause a teen to commit suicide. These include, physical, emotional, sexual and verbal. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys is sexually abused before the age of 18. Abused children develop distorted patterns of cognition because they are stressed emotionally by abuse. As adults, they often misinterpret other people’s behavior and refuse to trust them or they may be unable to handle strong feelings, or be unusually tolerant of behavior from others that most people would protest. Children who are abused are often in physical and emotional pain at school; they cannot concentrate on schoolwork, and fall behind in their grades. They often find it hard to make or keep friends, and may be bullied or become bullies themselves. Alcohol may be the reason for abuse and some children are even abused emotionally because parents are always busy and do not show and give children the love and attention that they should get.

Fifteen percent of all alcohol-dependent people die by suicide. Alcoholism is a factor in about 30 percent of all completed suicides and this is a loss of 7,000 to 13,000 people every year. Alcohol and other drug abuse is often related to psychological stress and other mental health problems. Some people use alcohol or other drugs to relieve their emotional pain. Alcohol use impairs judgment and leads to impulsive behavior. A person at risk of suicide who might not have made an attempt while sober may do so while intoxicated. Long-term consumption of alcohol leads to depression, which in turn increases the probability of suicide. Ninety-six percent of alcoholics who die by suicide continue their substance abuse up to the end of their lives.

Although there are many more reasons as to why people commit suicide here are the three most common reasons. People get so caught up in thinking how “bad” their life is and would rather end it then thinking of the positive outcomes and how things could be so much worse then they are. Then there are some who would rather just drink away their problems, numb their bodies thinking that it will solve everything when the truth is, it only makes things worse. They put themselves in a position where they could possibly take their own life.
