Mount Sinai researchers discover why cocaine is so addictive
( The Mount Sinai Hospital / Mount Sinai School of Medicine ) Mount Sinai researchers have discovered how cocaine corrupts the brain and becomes addictive. These findings — the first to connect activation of specific neurons to alterations in cocaine reward — were published in Science on Oct. 15. The results may help researchers in developing new ways of treating those addicted to the drug.

Sixteen people charged in KCK cocaine-distribution ring
Sixteen people are charged with distributing more $ 4.2 million in cocaine in the streets of Kansas City, Kan., federal officials announced Monday. From 2007 until this month, they sold cocaine from drug houses that included one within 1,000 feet of a school, said Barry Grissom, U.S. attorney for Kansas.

Van Gelder denies cocaine use
Former world champion gymnast Yuri van Gelder has denied using cocaine again in the buildup to the World Championships. Van Gelder released a statement saying he was having trouble coping with the pressure before the championships begin this weekend in Rotterdam but had not taken drugs. Van Gelder recently returned to the sport after serving a yearlong ban for cocaine use.
