Find Out the Best Way to Quit Drinking Here
If fairytales do come true, a lot of alcoholics would probably ask their fairy godmothers to show them the best way to quit drinking. The task is too difficult that many people think it’s a lot easier to just give-in to the habit.
The decision to stop drinking comes to the person with or without external influence. Some just get hit by a sudden realization that it’s time to do something about their problem; although it is also a common scenario that some alcoholics decide to stop drinking because they already have serious medical problems.
Basically, there are four ways on how you can stop alcohol dependence:
1. AA Meetings or other AA-Style Guilt-Based Program– Alcoholics Anonymous programs and those that are of the same nature encourage heavy drinkers to steer away from alcohol by using a program designed to spark a guilty feeling if the person ever touches a bottle again. The alcoholics are constantly reminded that if they do not do anything about their problem, they would be letting their loved ones down. If they practice any religion, they would be letting God down too. Anyway, the point is they should stop drinking alcohol to live a life that will be more pleasing to the people they love and care for.
2. Medical Intervention— For some, the best way to quit drinking is through medical intervention. They are given medications that will suppress their craving for the substance. After which, they are recommended to join either a guilt-based program or a self-empowering one.
3. Self-Empowering Program– This kind of program is like the guilt-based program in the sense that it is designed to be taken according to a certain schedule. However, instead of focusing on pleasing others, self-empowering program is about focusing on the self and its journey to finding personal happiness. The program believes that when the drinker is happy and content with his or her own life, others will be happy with him or her too. Although both this and the guilt-based program are found effective in treating alcohol dependents, this method’s success rate is higher.
4. Stopping cold turkey on one’s own– Some people decide to quit drinking on their own and not seek help from the outside. This method is quite dangerous because it’s obviously tougher to wrestle with the self without anyone to back up the good side. However, some people who were strong-willed actually succeeded in the process. If you are the type of person who’s not comfortable with the idea of depending on others to make yourself better, you may initially try this method. However, it would not hurt to at least tell your loved ones what you are going through so they can give you the support that can help you a great deal.
The best way to quit drinking really depends on the kind of personality you have. If you enjoy being with people and you like to draw strength from them, you can join recovery programs. But, if you are the private type who’d rather deal with the problem on your own, you may just first embark on a personal recovery program.
