In a recent study conducted by Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center in Connecticut, there was a sharp increase in female admissions listing alcohol as their primary substance of choice. According to the Mountainside Study, 46.51 percent of all female admissions in the past ninety days, ages 18 and over, listed alcohol as their primary substance of choice. Admissions for females listing heroin as their primary drug of choice accounted for 16.28 percent of total female admissions, followed closely by Oxycontin and Cocaine, which accounted for 13.95 and 6.98 percent of overall female admissions respectively.

The number of female poly-substance admissions, ages 18 and over, remained relatively flat, however there was an increase in the number of female admissions listing Heroin as their secondary drug of choice, these accounted for 22.22 percent of female admissions. While the largest category of female admissions listing a secondary drug of choice continued to be alcohol with 33.33 percent, this percentage has compressed somewhat due to the increase of the number of females ages 18 listing Oxycontin as their secondary drug of choice – 14.81 percent.
