Prescription Drugs & Consumer Products, Getting It Right In Mexico

Hello, I am Jon Couch.  I am a pharmacist working in Texas and living in Texas and the state of Jalisco, Mexico.  My interest in prescription drugs in Mexico started in 2004 when our best friends in the world moved to Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico.  During our first visit to Ajijic, I stopped in a few drug stores (farmacias).  And those visits have lead to all my web site work.  For, as a pharmacist, I know the importance of getting the information to the patient.  All parties must understand what disease state is being treated & what drugs are being used!  That is why, in the U.S.A., a pharmacist MUST be on duty for you to pick up a new order.

Of course, the drug delivery system is vastly different in Mexico.  And an excellent job is done with what is available.  But just a few things that are different can interfere with drug treatment.  The names of drugs in Mexico can be very different, often with up to 75 new names for a drug from back home.  And, of course, that crazy language thing!

Not all of us expatriates speak fluent Spanish, and not all the young clerks in the farmacia speak fluent English.  Let alone be well versed in drugs and diseases.  So we find, often, a well meaning clerk assisting an elderly, grouchy expatriate.  An expat who may not be super informed of his drugs.  Oh, you say that there is a reference book on the counter.  And there is!  And everyone I looked at was out of date, and missing pages.

So, you see the problem.  Every chance for an error is in place!

And with this in mind, I started to gather information about the top drugs in Canada and the U.S.A., and relate them to the drugs found in Mexico.  And that is on our site already.  But I found that a frequent question was regarding ‘cost.’   And you will save money on drugs.  But how much will you save & how much can you expect to spend?  That also is on our site now.

In addition, we show price comparisons for medicines and consumer products from throughout Mexico.  I’ve centered on Guadalajara, the 2nd largest city in Mexico, and show the prices, and price range of jup to 3000 items.  The stores are named, and the prices are shown.  So you now have some basic knowledge of what to expect when shopping.

Please visit our site, learn what you can, and perhaps share with us some of your shopping experiences in your new home, Mexico!

Thanks,

Jon
