How do I stop missing someone that I had to leave because of their drug addiction?

I was with a man for over 10 yrs. We had so many good times and alot of not so. I stayed with him-we built a home together-our dogs were like brothers-but he developed a raging addiction to meth and I tried everything to get him to stop, without success. I felt there was no other way than to cut ties. I am so sad without him and my dog sits and looks at me like “Why are you doing this to me?” He loved it there as did I – I think about him all the time-but I know to have stayed would have been extremely unhealthy in more ways than one. He has since gotten 10 times worse with the drugs and refuses to admit its the problem. Its the hardest thing I have ever had to do -stay away. Did I do the right thing? I tried for 5 years to get him off of the dope.It was dragging me down.
