Ode to forgotten corner stores offering obscure VHS rentals… This film, ‘Spookies’, was rented at a long gone shop called Colson’s in Latham, NY. Because VHS cassettes have easily manipulated erasure heads, we were able to record footage directly onto the official store copy. What footage, you ask? How about someone with a pillowcase over their head for starters…. This is followed by a sequence from the film, Scalps; another Colson’s VHS offering. Incidentally, the lion shown here is seen only at the beginning of the film, never to reappear. Significance? None that I can see. Incredible. The greatest tragedy here is that I recorded over the ending theme- which is haunting and beautiful.
