Drug raids in Ballarat, Victoria

March 13th 2008- Channel 10 news Police have smashed an international drug ring after raids in Ballarat and Melbourne today. More than 50 officers working with the Australian Federal Police and Australian Customs Service executed 17 warrants and arrested 14 people in connection to drug trafficking and importation. More than 50 guns, including handguns and body armour was seized. The drugs seized included cannabis, methamphetamines, ecstasy and amphetamines. Two hydroponic setups and 00 in cash were also seized. Several guns, including an assault rifle, was seized during a raid at a Snake Valley home. Police said the network ring was importing drugs into Ballarat, which were then being distributed to street dealers and throughout the western suburbs of Melbourne. Superintendent Andrew Allen described the drug ring as “ambitious” and was confident the ring leaders were caught in the investigation. Among those arrested were two men from Snake Valley and Ballarat North, both aged 33, and a 27-year-old Snake Valley man. A 43-year-old Ballarat man was bailed to appear in the Ballarat Magistrates Court to face charges of trafficking a drug of dependence on May 5. Properties in Snake Valley, Ballarat, Ballarat North, Mt Helen, Sebastopol and Mt Clear were among those raided.
