I am 19 years old and I do not want to associate with my family because of their drug and alcohol abuse?

Question by jade: I am 19 years old and I do not want to associate with my family because of their drug and alcohol abuse?
I have been living hours away from my family and all by myself since I turned 18 and went to college.

I haven’t been back to see my family very often. I am the only one in my family who doesn’t do drugs or drink.

My mom and father hold down jobs and take care of me, its just that I never want to bring home friends or boyfriends because they can be very embarassing. My mom drinks too much at night and we are nothing alike. Sometimes my dad smokes weed and drinks too much. My brother also smokes weed and pops pills, and my sister has mental health issues and abuses drugs and alchohol.

Somehow I ended up not like them. If I mention these problems as the reason why I dont want to see them, they freak out and get angry with me.

But its the truth and I don’t want to bring my boyfriend them, its embarrassing. And they get mad at me for it. Their substance abuse is too much for me. We can’t even have a normaly family vacation because it ends up one drunken blur for them of screaming and yelling.

I don’t like to be around my family. Do I have to be? When I get older, can I have a wedding without them?

I love my family, and I know they love me, but I don’t like to be around them.

Is this wrong of me?

I dont think there is anything wrong with you, it is good to see that you didnt follow their lifestyle. You should be proud that you went to college and made something of yourself. It is sad that your family bad habits. dont be to hard on them as it is a illness and they need help, but only they can do that.
