Why is it that sometimes withdrawal symptoms appear and sometimes not when an addiction is broken?

Question by canron4peace: Why is it that sometimes withdrawal symptoms appear and sometimes not when an addiction is broken?
For example some people suffer terrible withdrawals from nicotine while others feel fine?
I personally quit after many years of smoking pack a day (25) when my young daughter asked me to quit. I had no withdrawals and quit completely overnight. Seven years later started again and after another year went to five cigs a day for about one year and one day when I saw myself exceed that amount quit outright for over 20 years now. No withdrawal effects.
There are many different types of addictions which are normally only seen as habits and sometimes not even that. ie. tanning

I don’t know anybody who did not have problems quitting nicotine, unless maybe they did not really get addicted in the first place (only tried it). I think some of the modern aid (nicotine patches, etc.) are supposed to help, and maybe some people say they are feeling fine because they are trying to convince themself.
