Cubs had Josh Hamilton for all of about 10 minutes?

Question by Blackhawks 2010 Stanley Cup Cham: Cubs had Josh Hamilton for all of about 10 minutes?
Josh Hamilton was the #1 overall pick in the 1999 draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. 18 Months later he gets in a bad automobile accident and starts to get hooked on drugs, crack, cocaine and heroin. Got himself clean in October of 2005 and has been clean since then. He was restored to good standing in June of 2006 played 15 minor league games in Tampa’s system and then showed up as a player eligible for the Rule 5 draft. He was picked up by the Chicago Cubs in the winter of 2006 and shortly after traded to Cincinatti for I think ,000.

How much better would this guy have made the Cubs?
Why didn’t the Cubs give this kid a shot before trading him to Cincinatti right away?
