How do you section a family member for alcohol abuse?
Question by &hearts Emmy’s Mommy &hearts: How do you section a family member for alcohol abuse?
My sister and I are looking to section our brother because he is a severe alcoholic. He has an 8 year old son living with him and he’s a single parent (mother took off years ago). Right now he lives upstairs from me so I took his son and he’s been staying with me for about a week now. The DSS showed up at his house because he wasn’t taking my nephew to school. So because he thinks he’s going to lose his son he keeps drinking and won’t take his son to school because he thinks DSS will take him from school. Well, tomorrow the plan is to go to the court house and try to get him sectioned to go to treatment and try to get custody of his son signed over to one of us until he gets himself together. After years of bouncing my nephew around we are sick of it and have to help this child to have a normal, loving and stable life. But we are unsure about what the steps are. Also, do you think DSS/DYF will let me or my sister take custody of him or do you think they will take him? My sister and I both have children and nice stable house holds. Just so you can better answer the question. Thanks soo much for reading and thanks in advance for the answers!

You would do well to speak with an emergency room nurse, a doctor can bakers act someone if they are a threat to themselves or others, DSS/DYF will probably allow one of you to have custody if he will voluntarily seek help with his problem, another option would be to speak with a rehab center in your area and they would know if the state you reside in has a plan established where he could go in and seek assistance without involving anyone else, usually money is available from the state to pay for it.~
