Would it be too far-fetched to write a novel or short-story about abuse in an adoptive home?

Question by Nevermore…: Would it be too far-fetched to write a novel or short-story about abuse in an adoptive home?
What about abuse and alcoholism? It would be fiction, of course, but would I still need to be extremely realistic in that regard? Supposedly, only 1% of adoptive homes experience abuse, and with that small percentage, I’m, worried that any other unlikely event in the story may make the story seem impossible.

Unfortunately, these kinds of things do happen, and I personally know people who it’s happened to. Just because not everyone experiences it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. And the story of it needs to be told to prevent it.

Make sure that you do your research to make everything as realistic as possible. Don’t make things up just because you don’t know the answer. Take the time to find out the answers, and make your story as real as possible.

Good luck, and happy writing!
