Is the justice system harder on minorities?
Question by Nubian King: Is the justice system harder on minorities?
Today in class, we had a huge debate on the justice system, and the sentencing given to minorities vs the sentencing of whites. Honestly until today I have never thought about this, so I found the topic very interesting. A point that was brought up in class is that African American men make up a major portion of inmates in the prison system but we are only about 12% of the population. Another key point is sentencing for possession of crack, compared to the sentencing of just regular cocaine. Many argued that possession of crack is a much harsher sentence then possession of powdered cocaine, when in the same amounts. There argument behind this is that crack is a drug typically used in the inner city where you would find more minorities, and the powdered cocaine is more of a high-class drug. I have not done much research on the second point, but I still found it interesting, and I am trying to find other view points. So do you think the justice system is harsher on minorities, then it is on whites?
