First appointment at psychiatric clinic tomorrow – what to expect?

Question by Pebbles: First appointment at psychiatric clinic tomorrow – what to expect?
It it following from a refferral from my GP for self-harm last year. I’m now very scared that they will try to institutionalize me – I have a self-harm problem which I have had since about 10 years of age, possibly younger… I am violent and consume upwards of £100 worth of marijuana a week… will this mean I have to be put into residential drug rehab or anything? Will this be compulsory? Since everyone in my house takes drugs I wouldn’t be able to quit at home, not that I want to a huge deal… anyway, yeah, i’m 17, what can I expect tomorrow?

Psychiatrists usually just ask lots of questions!

People are only placed in institutions if they are thought to be a real danger to others, and totally out of their minds – you sound pretty rational to me, despite your problems.

It’s always nerve wracking when you meet a psychiatrist for the first time. Just remember that they’re just doctors, that’s all. Be honest in your answers; that’s the best thing you can do to help yourself.
