Penalties for drug sales – near churches???

Question by So-crates Part Deus: Penalties for drug sales – near churches???
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080205/ap_on_fe_st/odd_grandmother_arrested;_ylt=AnuRBQKkdfl2Rgvql9OEIRPtiBIF

According to the story, this grandmother was arrested for selling and possessing crack cocaine (and powered cocaine) from her home – which was located within 1000 feet of a church…

Now, I understand the purpose of giving stiff penalties to drug sellers near SCHOOLS – but why near churches?? Let’s make sure we understand this: stiffer penalties are to protect vulnerable children from being suckered into trying and buying drugs.

So, whats the excuse about Church?? Are Church-goers somehow vulnerable to drug abuse, so stiffer penalties are given to sellers near churches to protect church-goers?? You cant tell me this is because the Church is a learning center – if that was the case, then she would be in trouble for selling within 1000 feet of a school, not a church…
Anna – HELLOOOOOO – if it houses a pre-school, then the crime is selling within 1000 feet of a school, not a church. I dont understand why the Church gets special treatment here. Why dont they make it stiffer to sell drugs outside my home, which is an institute of higher learning as well?!?!
Wiccanhp – I read that story too. Hey – at least the beer was safe!

I agree. The concept seems a bit ridiculous!
