I mean what sort of physical and emotional changes might he encounter?

It really depends on the person. It will be helpful to find treatment programs that can help him deal with anxiety, arthritis and any other conditions. Physically, he might feel withdrawal symptoms that anyone else would but professional help will make sure that there are no dangerous side effects. Emotionally, rehabs provide counseling and there are peers that you can talk to to support your recovery.
