High cost, rigorous rules can trap Medicare patients
On the evening of Jan. 3, Fran Bogom dozed off, fell, and broke her arm. She went to Abington Memorial Hospital, where doctors decided to keep her overnight. Not because Bogom needed to, but because Medicare would not pay for rehabilitation until she was hospitalized first for three days.
