why is the sentencing different in grams for crack cocaine?

Question by MysticNight13: why is the sentencing different in grams for crack cocaine?
Okay i know it sounds confusing but hears what i mean.
whatever kind of cociane, whether it be powder or just crack,why is the sentecing of having a certain amount of grams the way it is?
example:
5 grams of crack=5years
5grams of powder cocaine=5years

50 grams of crack=10 years
5,000 powder cocaine=10 years

why is that?
i can clarify more if you dont understand, but hopefully you do. Its for a term paper of mine. Anyone wiling to help me? = )
