Toddlers Test Positive For Crack Cocaine

Three toddlers were taken to an emergency room Wednesday, where they tested positive for crack cocaine, prosecutors said. Tasha Cole, 17, has been charged with four counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. Cole’s 2-year-old son was one of the toddlers, and the other two children, ages 2 and 3, were also under her care. According to court documents, Cole originally said the kids found the drugs at a neighbor’s house, but she later admitted that she bought the crack and intended to sell it. She told investigators that she and the children were at her apartment when she cut up the cocaine on a plate and that the children had taken crumbs off the plate. Court papers show that Cole’s sons hands were covered with the cocaine, he had cocaine on his lips and he appeared to be chewing. The children were taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital when they started having seizures. Cole’s son recovered quickly and is back with family. The conditions of the other two children were not released. The toddler’s grandmother told KMBC’s Martin Augustine that she feared something like this would happen. “Eventually I knew something was going to happen, but I just didn’t know it would be this extreme,” said the grandmother, who didn’t want her name used. “Thank God my grandbaby is still alive.” The grandmother said that once doctors got the boy’s seizures under control, the child was tested for flu.
