WARNING: This medication may rarely cause serious (possibly fatal) allergic reactions and other side effects such as a severe peeling skin rash (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome), blood disorders (e.g., agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia), liver damage, or lung injury. Tell your doctor immediately if the following rare but very serious side effects occur: signs of infection (such as persistent sore throat or fever), paleness, joint pain/aches, persistent cough, trouble breathing, easy bleeding/bruising, yellowing eyes or skin, persistent nausea/vomiting, unusual fatigue, dark urine. USES: Sulfadoxine with pyrimethamine is used to prevent and treat malaria. This medication should not be used in infants less than 2 months of age.
OTHER USES: This medication may also be used to treat toxoplasmosis infection or to prevent pneumonia in HIV-infected patients.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth after a meal, or as directed by your doctor. Swallow the medication whole. Do not chew the tablet. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication. The dosage and duration of therapy is based on your medical condition, age, and weight. Take this medication exactly as prescribed. Do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor. It is important to continue taking this for the length of time prescribed. Stopping therapy too soon may result in inadequate treatment and can lead to a reinfection. If this medication is used for the prevention of malaria, remember to take it one or two days before arriving in the area where malaria is present. It is also important to understand that it is still possible to develop malaria. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop a fever. Malaria is best treated if therapy is started early.
