The Abuse Potential of Medical Marijuana

The Abuse Potential of Medical Marijuana

While rushing around the house this morning, I caught a flash of a disturbing crime from the news. A local Pharmacist had been held up at knife point in the pharmacy. The perpetrator wanted Morphine, Oxycontin, and Xanex. After the report, I conjured up a similar scenario for Medical Marijuana. Could a Cannabis dispensary ever get jacked by a pot fiend? Most advocates readily admit that Medical Marijuana isn’t “that type” of drug. However, the abuse potential of Medical Marijuana most definitely exists.

Recreational users of Marijuana cringe at the thought of their beloved weed being compared to a scene right out of “Reefer Madness.” But in “Reefer Madness”, an early black & white anti-pot film, the over board characterization was intended to scare you straight. Today we wonder who will fall victim next to prescription medicine, ala Ledger, Elvis, “The Gloved Wonder”, and others. And that’s scary enough.

Medical Marijuana is no different than any other prescription medicine, therefore, consultation with a doctor and a complete understanding of addiction and abuse –must be addressed. As an example, many chronic pain sufferers may find analgesic relief from prescription Marijuana. If a little gives relief, then maybe a lot will defer pain altogether. On a regular basis, would the abuse machinery then be put into motion?

Remember, you don’t always die as a result of abuse, but a part of your life could become derailed as a result of the abuse. Such a derailment could take you back to square one, an ailment with no relief from Medical Marijuana.

Once a person has an I.D. as a qualified Medical Marijuana patient, that qualification extends into one more arena. If your prescription medicine interferes with any part of your life, your doctor or abuse professional must be alerted. and a re-evaluation of your over-all health is now necessary.
