Does “music addiction” exist?

Question by Nachiket Pandit: Does “music addiction” exist?
Now we all know that you can be addicted to drugs and the like, but what is the medical consensus on addiction to music? If it exists, how does one know if one is addicted to music? If not, why isn’t there such a thing yet, seeing as how if we substitute “drugs” in place of “music” in the music addict’s self-description, we would alarmingly cry drug addiction?

Music is not an addiction in the medical community. Someone can be psychologically dependent on just about anything, but it is only a harmful addiction if it controls the persons life in a negative way. This would be a symptom of some other condition like OCD and not an addiction since there is not a physical dependence on it. True addiction is a complex disease with a physical need for a substance. Otherwise it is an obsession, not an addiction.
