i love life when im sober, and hate my life when im not. whats the best way to get over the hump? i can last a day or ttwo then im back on the wagon. ive been to AA. and it didnt work, not because i didnt try. but i dont like constantly identifying myself as an alcoholic, and i think how can you forget your past if you bring it up and make an issue of it. if i make it relevant i cannt get away from it. any way, im open to opnions

AA and AA-based rehabs get a lot of undeserved press, they are not effective. AA has about a 5% success rate, quitting on your own also has about a 5% success rate; AA just takes credit for the 5% who join and have the motivation and determination to stay sober.

Many swear by RR, a method rather than a support group. You can probably find “Rational Recovery: The New Cure for Substance Addiction” in your local public library.

I bounced in and out of AA for years only managing months of sobriety at a time. I eventually quit on my own after receiving help for the depression that fueled my drinking.

The NIAAA’s 2001–2002 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions interviewed over 43,000 people. Using the criteria for alcohol dependence found in the DSM-IV, they found:
“About 75 percent of persons who recover from alcohol dependence do so without seeking any kind of help, including specialty alcohol (rehab) programs and AA. Only 13 percent of people with alcohol dependence ever receive specialty alcohol treatment.”
