Can I drink alcohol while taking metronidazole antibiotics?

Question by Lisa: Can I drink alcohol while taking metronidazole antibiotics?
I am currently on my 5th day of taking 250mg of metronidazole to treat an infection I have. I hear that there are some side effects if you drink alcohol while on it. Has anyone ever drank while on it? And if so, what happened? Should I risk it? I won’t be drinking a lot. Just one or two drinks.

Alcohol should be avoided because metronidazole and alcohol together can cause severe nausea, vomiting, cramps, flushing, and headache…I wouldn’t chance getting sick over a few drinks. I did it once and spent about 4 hours in the bathroom.

Were you drinking when you got “the infection”? Maybe you should leave the booze alone for awhile since it seems to cause problems, huh?
