Anti-Marijuana people: Why are you against Marijuana?

Question by Procrasti Nation: Anti-Marijuana people: Why are you against Marijuana?
I’m assuming that 99% of the people against it are either drug dealers or uneducated about drug laws and know nothing about the plant, because I cannot think of one valid reason as to why it should remain illegal.

It doesn’t kill braincells. It doesn’t cause cancer – in fact, it’s been shown to have cancer-killing properties and it has been shown to starve off cancerous cells while leaving healthy cells fine. No studies have been able to accurately prove that it kills braincells and it’s even been suggested to stimulate the growth of new braincells. There are countless medicinal uses – from MS, to HIV/AIDS, to eating disorders, fibromyalgia, ADD/ADHD, Autism, Chronic pain, diabetes, sleeping disorders, eczema, depression, anxiety, glaucoma, chemo patients, cancer, anger management, withdrawal symptoms, etc etc etc.

And anyone who knows anything about the drug war and drug laws should know that marijuana prohibition just creates a huge door of opportunity to the black market, thus creating more violent and dangerous crime and criminals (as was seen with alcohol prohibition). The real drug problem are the laws, not the drugs themselves.

Plus saying that it is illegal because it’s “unhealthy” is BS. Big macs and Baconators and that F’n thing KFC just came out with are pretty much guaranteed to give you a heart attack, together Tobacco and Alcohol kill roughly 500,000 US americans a year ALONE, and alcohol is actually a harder drug than weed. Plus, there’s never been one recorded death in all of history due to marijuana alone. And, it’s been shown to have anti-cancer properties (as mentioned), cannabis is also probably the most medicinally (and industrially) useful plant known to mankind.

Marijuana wasn’t even made illegal because it was “unhealthy”, anyways! Marijuana laws are based on racist beliefs, BS and propaganda. Hell, we call it “Marijuana” instead of Cannabis today because if they put Marijuana in headlines, it would keep the words “cannabis” and “hemp” out of headlines and would make people more fearful of it, because if it had a mexican name it would be associated with mexicans. They’d also spread BS saying black men liked to smoke it and it would make them step on white men’s shadows, encourage interracial sex and it would make a black man laugh at a white man.

Gateway theory is also a myth. Many people who go onto meth may have tried weed first, but before that they would’ve tried alcohol (a harder drug). Also, very very few people go onto the harder drugs, and the ones that do usually do it because of they’re of a risk taking and/or addictive personality. Besides, it’s like saying “masturbation is the gateway to rape”. It’s pointless.

How can anyone be against drug laws, unless they’re a drug dealer (who don’t want it legal, because they’ll be driven out of business if it happens) and uneducated people.

Are there any actual good reasons as to why it should be kept illegal? Because honestly, I can’t think of any.

It’s also a huge waste of money and resources.

Oh, and before you all assume I’m a huge pothead – I’m not a smoker! I don’t even like drinking! It doesn’t take a complete pothead to realize drug laws are BS.
Too much of anything is bad, and people shouldn’t be penalized because a couple of people can’t use it responsibly.
@ Winston
Stoned driving and Drunk driving are two completely different things. No, people should not be driving under the influence of weed at all – however, it is nowhere near as much of a concern as driving while drunk or even while distracted (ex: cellphones)
And, there are many people who already do drive high. They don’t cause nearly as much damage as drunk drivers.

People who get drunk will take stupid risks, while people who are stoned will be aware of their intoxication and take extra precautions to drive safely.

If you’re high you shouldn’t be driving – but you won’t nearly as dangerous as a drunk driver.
@ Dan L
As I said to Winston, stoned driving isn’t nearly as much of an issue as drunk driving. Shouldn’t be done, but not nearly as harmful. I don’t feel like re-typing it, so feel free to read my first reply.

Also, legalization won’t increased stoned driving – it’s doubtful it would even increase usage (especially if you look up stats on legalization/decriminalization)

I don’t “cling” to no drug. I don’t smoke weed. I don’t drink. Hell, I have a hard time taking any pill/drug because I don’t like it! However, I see no problem with those who do. I know tons of people who started smoking recreationally who benefited from it later on medicinally. It isn’t a “crutch” – it isn’t even that addicting a drug. People who smoke it usually do to just relax or have a good night – like the person having a beer every once in a while. Not all pot smokers are complete stoner potheads that only smoke weed all day every day.

I’ve done hours upon hours of research and I’ve written a big, long research essay on the subject, read many studies and articles and watched a dozen documentaries on the subject. On top of that, I’ve witnessed it help some of the people I know. It helped this girl with her anger problems, this brilliant guy with ADHD who had been failing starting getting 80s and 90s in his classes once he noticed it helped him concertrate and stay seated in class, and this other girl was on heroin and weed helped her kick it. Those are just a few instances.

In some people, pot can become addicting – ANYTHING can be addicting. People try eating chips, they like it, so if they eat more does that equal addiction? No. That’s what I got from your logic. Many do it here and there just to relax or have a good time. Like Video games – some get addicted, but people do it here and there for fun and a good time. Same with alcohol.
@ Nurse Kelly
Actually, it can and has helped people with depression.
Typically, whether it helps or not depends on the person, the strain and which plant in the cannabis family it comes from.
@ Nurse Kelly
Also, it doesn’t just reduce vomiting and nausea – it increases hunger (useful for eating disorders or increase hunger in anyone with little appetite), has been shown to kill off cancerous/tumourous cells, and is a natural painkiller.

Also, Marinol is BS. It’s synthetic THC. The real stuff is much more benificial and costs less. Also, I do not understand how making it in a pill makes it “okay” if the real plant is so “bad”. The side effects are that of getting “high”.

Also, I found the psychosis studies pretty sketchy. Plus, according to them, risks generally only increase if they’re likely to develop it or have a family history of it. I’m not saying it’s impossible, I’m just saying I’m a skeptic.

I don’t care what you do with your life. I will never be interested in drugs. It’s main ingredient is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), a mind-altering chemical. Marijuana produced today has a level of THC that is up to 25 times higher than the type sold in the 1960s. And depending on how it is “cut”, it can contain hundreds of other harmful chemicals, many of which are carcinogenic (cancer-causing).

Biologically, marijuana affects the brain, heart, lungs, sexual organs, and depresses the immune system. The effects on the brain include distortion of the senses, confused judgment, and decreased motor skills. Operating machinery and motor vehicles becomes dangerous. Effects on the heart include rapid heart rate and high blood pressure. Respiratory problems include pharyngitis, laryngitis, and bronchitis. Marijuana has been associated with lung, head, and neck cancers. It reduces the T-cells in the immune system that are needed to fight off infections. In pre-teens, marijuana use can retard physical growth and slow down development. High dose marijuana use can cause decreased fertility, breast enlargement in males, and breast milk production.
