Question by Alan: Adderall questions. Emphasize QUESTIONS read additional details!?
Alright guys I have 3 questions about adderall
1) can I get adderall prescribed for social anxiety?
2) has it been proven that adderall can treat social anxiety. ( I have self diagnosed myself with this due to some research. It seems to work I don’t have a severe problem but still is a huge problem.)
3) what are the “long term affects” of using adderall?
(sorry guys but answering that it’s bad for you or I’m stupid or just do it at all are not welcomed. Im not abusing it but using it for a legitimate reason other than using it for recreational reasons.

Adderall is a stimulant, so it would make anxiety worse. Any stimulant will worsen anxiety disorders, including stimulants that seem harmless, such as caffeine.

If you have social anxiety and it is having a big impact on your life, there are medications that can really help (lots of them). One that comes to mind is Paxil. There are others that are tranquilizers or mood stabilizers or even anti-seizure meds. It would be best to get an opinion from a doctor that specializes in the nervous system, like a neurologist or psychiatrist. They will know what to start you out on, and if that doesn’t work, they’ll be able to work with you to find something that does.

I’ve taken Adderall for a couple years for ADHD. I honestly wish I’d never started taking it. At first it helped a lot with paying attention and my mood was improved. But it doesn’t take long before you gain a tolerance. Then it takes more to get the same effect. The problem is, the higher the dose, the more you will feel the negative side effects of it, like anxiety, compulsions, being jumpy, being paranoid, grinding your teeth, etc. The biggest problem is that it isn’t a permanent solution- not even close. After about 6 months, you’ll be back at square one, but this time with new problems caused by the amphetamine salts (that is what Adderall is- if you get the generic from the pharmacy it will actually say “Amphetamine” on the bottle).

Long term, amphetamine causes (sometimes permanent) changes in your brain. It can lead to “amphetamine psychosis” where you see/hear things that aren’t there, have crazy delusions and are paranoid. Amphetamines also leach calcium from your system, which will make your bones and teeth weaker (think meth mouth…that’s caused by methamphetamine, which is stronger, but it’s the same deal). It over-excites the brain cells that make dopamine, and can kill them. Those do not ever grow back, and dopamine is what makes you feel happy. Also, Adderall increases tics.

You’d probably benefit more from a medication that is soothing. If you take a medication that chills you out and you find some info on stress management so you can control your anxiety reactions, you’ll feel a lot better.
