What is relapse? When can it occur, and how long after “recovery”?

Question by Shen: What is relapse? When can it occur, and how long after “recovery”?
I am just wondering… sometimes when life gets stressful and overwhelming, I am tempted to retreat to some of my past addictions (alcohol, anorexia, cutting) and occasionally do so. I make the excuse that it’s okay because I am having a relapse and therefore can’t help it. But deep inside I know that I could use self-discipline and healthy coping methods to resist it if I tried.. so is this really a “relapse” or am I just missing that part of my life that is gone? How long after recovery before these urges and slip-ups stop? For me, I consider that I’ve been recovered for about 3 years. Insight or advice?

If you have used in the last 3 yrs then you are NOT recovered, you are a chronic relapser. As a recovered alcoholic for over 16 yrs ( and other chemical free since 1977 ) I have never come close to drinking again simply because Almighty God removed my obsession to drink and I don’t forget how fortunate I am. Either stick with recovery or go back out and get it out of your system. If you survive you may be fortunate to recover and live a better life. You are playing with fire that you don’t completely understand. I know people who said they were going to drink just one more time and they’d see me tomorrow; one died choking on her own vomit after being sober for over seven years and the other guy said he just wanted one drink; he walked in front of a bus. I’ll bet you if I could ask both of them they would say they didn’t want that to happen, but because they paid attention to their alcoholic thinking they lost their lives. As I remember from a movie– get busy living or get busy dieing but make a choice and stick with it.Good luck and I will pray for you.
