Do I have reasonable grounds for emancipation?[California]?
Question by MB: Do I have reasonable grounds for emancipation?[California]?
I will be 16 in 2 days. I got my high school diploma equivalent (CHSPE) early and currently attend community college. My mother is schizophrenic and an alcoholic. My father was an alcoholic and drug addict. Both of them had their parental rights removed a long time ago. I am living with my legal guardian, my grandfather, who is 78 years old. I also have a co-legal guardian, my aunt, but she is incapable of taking me. My grandfather constantly says that he’s too old to be doing this. He is also emotionally abusive and 1 psychiatrist and 1 psychologist called social services within the last 6 months but the social worker dismissed the claim. I already basically take care of myself, I schedule my doctor appts., take the bus to college, and buy myself food. I have a job but I also get financial aid for college. I would be able to financially support myself with the help of my college financial aid. Does the financial aid count as public help” even though it’s for my costs while attending college? Based on this information do I have a reasonable chance to be able to get emancipated? Thank you for the help.

You sound more together than many people out there. Yes, you sound like you’ve got two feet on the ground and I think you might have a good change of getting emancipated. I wish you all the luck in the world, hope everything works out for the best for you. Line up your ducks, get everything organized, written down, and start the process. Financial aid as far as I know doesn’t count toward public assistance – those are educational costs, not living costs.
