2012 Todd Elliott Koger WEB AD PA Governor Corbett’s Budget Cuts new.wmv – More must be done to help black youth and stop the violence The epidemic of “black on black” gun violence has reached my family, friends and now my former students in the Duquesne City Schools (“Duquesne Killing Frightens Neighbors,” Dec. 19). But if we continue to do nothing, we are complicit. Several years ago I communicated my concerns to the US Department of Education, Pennsylvania Department of Education, Allegheny Intermediate Unit and others. I complained that there was not enough being done. As a teacher, I had witnessed students not being taught. I complained in writing that the instruction at the middle school amounted to little more than “busy work.” I warned that a failure to take immediate action would probably one day result in the death of a “good” kid (as a victim of gun violence), who only wanted the opportunity to learn. I still have the letter one of my students wrote where she only asked “for an opportunity to start her education over at a better school.” After I left Duquesne, I learned that at 15 the student became pregnant and dropped out of school. The year that I taught in the Duquesne City Schools and tried to make a change, my students’ PSSA test scores were good. But every year that followed my complaint, the PSSA test scores have plummeted. The kids in Duquesne just want a helping hand with the basic necessities of life: a meal, clean clothing and a variety of activities to keep them off the streets and let them learn that they are worthy of …
