In order to get rid of an addiction, you have to take a firm decision to do so. You have to achieve a strong desire to give up the certain habit or addiction. Having a firm and strong will power helps with giving up the addiction.
Also, clean out your closet, and do not keep any secrets. Stop hiding your addiction because of shame, and face yourself, and the world. List your bad habits, qualities, and addictions that you want to give up. Writing helps, so write down your inventory.
Seek help with support groups to achieve your goals. There are several groups like narcotics anonymous, alcoholic anonymous, gambling anonymous, et cetera. These groups are trained to work with you to help you give up your addiction successfully. Getting help from a mentor, or support from a friend can also be rather useful.
To give up your addiction include your family to help you. It does not mean that everyone has to share the same addiction. Nevertheless, the support of family helps a great deal. The help of family does not only provide support, but also strengthens ones resolve.
A long time of addiction also freezes certain positive feelings of a person. Once the healing process begins, the frozen feelings start to thaw. In addition, once you feel it, start once again, and take time to understand your lost feelings and emotions, and your reactions to those emotions. Try to explore new possibilities, make plans for the future, look for new experiences; after all, you only get to live once.
