6 Month Jail Term for Illegal Diet Pill Seller

A 44-year old man has been hit with a 6-month jail term for supplying unlicensed diet pills illegally. The man was found guilty of using his internet site to supply slimming pills containing ephedrine, which sold as an unlicensed preparation is a chargeable offence under the Medicines Act.
David Green, of Wickersley, Rotherham, was offering the illegal diet pills on his website and through online auction sites. He pleaded guilty at Sheffield Crown Court to advertising and selling an unlicensed medication and possession of a medicine with intent to place it on the market without the required license.
The Medicine and Healthcare Regulatory Authority firs t became interested in Mr. Green when he ignored their requests for compliance with medicines regulations. He continued to sell products illegally, until eventually the MHRA raided his property.
They seized several hundred bottles of capsules. Later laboratory tests confirmed that both types of capsule, which were called Thermoslimmer and Inch Aid, contained ephedrine.
Ephedrine is a drug whose long-term use has been associated with strokes and heart attacks. Derived from the Asiatic shrub Ma Huang, clubbers use is as an alternative to Ecstasy, though it can be found in over-the-counter preparations to treat asthma and breathing problems.
The MHRA have increasingly been required to monitor the activities of businesses claiming to sell diet pills over the internet. Laboratory tests have shown that many freely sold actually contain prescription-only slimming medications, such as Xenical and Reductil. Reductil lost its marketing license in January, but there are still companies on the internet which are claiming to offer it. Often, customers are unaware they are breaking any laws.
On the other end of the spectrum are the non-prescription diet pills and herbal remedies. While some, like sea-weed based appesite suppressant APPEsat, have had clinical trials to prove they are effective many others make extravagant promises for weight loss with no evidence to back them up.
Products like APPEsat are licensed by the MHRA as ‘Certified Medical Devices’ and have been proved to be safe, but many pills and appetite suppressants being sold are unlicensed and their safety is unknown.
Head of Operations at the MHRA Danny Lee-Frost said, “The products being sold by Mr Green have undergone no quality control and he continued selling these products even after he was made aware of the dangers of what he was doing.
“This is yet another example of the danger of buying any type of drug from an unregulated source. You simply don’t know what you are taking, the dosage, the conditions it was made in or most importantly, the effect it might have on your health.”
