How To Stop Drinking and Treat Alcoholism

Article by Jared Akers

Do you need to stop drinking? I’m a recovered alcoholic and I read something that sounded simple, “if you want to stop drinking, at some point you have to stop drinking.” Sounds simple enough right? So how do you stop drinking, and if you’re an alcoholic like me, how do you begin alcoholism treatment?

Whether or not someone is an alcoholic or not is up to the individual, but a good indicator is if they have trouble controlling their drinking. People often ask the alcoholic or someone abusing alcohol, “why don’t you just stop drinking?” On the topic of alcohol abuse, alcohol abuse treatment and alcoholism treatment are two different things and too much to cover in this article. For me personally, stopping the drinking was not the problem, I’d done that hundreds of times. It was staying stopped for more than a few weeks or months that was the real problem. And once I started, it was only a matter of time before I was drinking everyday and my life would become unmanageable. So how did I finally stop drinking for an extended period of time and find true happiness? I finally realized and accepted I had a disease, alcoholism, and it needed to be treated just like any other disease.

It is important to note there are many different reasons why people drink alcoholically. Moreover, if and when someone who abuses alcohol becomes an alcoholic or develops alcoholism is beyond the scope of my knowledge. I am an alcoholic and even I can’t tell you when I crossed the line from alcohol abuse into alcoholism. I have a general idea, but hat has come from years of recovery and self-searching.

Alcoholism treatment for me consists of working a recovery program based on spiritual growth and principles. Having been to several alcohol treatment centers, I finally realized that it was the day-to-day treatment of my disease that would mean long-term healthy recovery. I wake up everyday with untreated alcoholism. It’s what I do on a day-to-day basis to treat my disease that determines whether or not I drink today. After some time, it does get easier and my life has become greater than I could have ever imagined.
