Why is it easier for me to help others, but so hard to help myself?
Question by Suzie: Why is it easier for me to help others, but so hard to help myself?
So, I am a Youth Care Worker, I make a living helping “at-risk” Youth and Families. I am good at what I do, and really think I chose the right Career move. But, I have so many issues of my own, I find it hard to take care of myself. For example, I have an acute anxiety disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and periods of depression. I do not go to treatment for these things, I did in the past but I find it extremely hard to talk about myself, and the traumatic events in my life. I was raised in a family where it is not okay to talk about your problems to people, it is personal, and no one should know. So I lived a life of secrecy, keeping in periods of sexual abuse, and rape.
These things still effect me, and I don’t know why I cant just talk about it and get over it. It’s my job to help people who go through these things, and when I tell them they should talk about it because it will help, I mean it… I just cant take my own advice.
So why is it easier to help someone else, but so hard to help myself? I just don’t get it!

Because you have to expose your own problems and you are afraid. Coward! J/k, it takes some time to make difference for you own mental health problems. To talk to a free depression/ ocd/ bi polar group to get some of it off your chest.
