Marinol Withdrawal Question?
Question by Buster Friskers: Marinol Withdrawal Question?
My wife, a cancer patient, is very wary of pain medication due to the extremely addictive nature of it.
She has been prescribed 10 mg Marinol, with a dose twice a day for appetite. She does not care for the psychoactive effects but at least it makes her eat.
Now that she’s been on it for a few weeks we’ve began searching the net for withdrawal symptoms in anticipation of getting off it. We’ve read that withdrawal can be as bad as for heroin, according to one source. Another source says that withdrawal symptoms occurred when test patients were given 210 mg a day, 10 times what she takes.
Her oncologist dismisses any notion that it might be addictive and harmful.
What will withdrawal be like from 20 mg per day?
Thank you for any help.

Chances of withdrawl symptoms from Marinol are extremely low, however, if you are still concerned, you can wean her doses over a few weeks. Please talk to your doctor about weaning though, or at least let him know that’s what you plan on doing. I wouldn’t stress too much about it though, controlling her appetite so she can be strong enough to fight the cancer is much more important.
