Looking at our society today, one can only hope that someday, problems like these will eventually go down the annals of history. Children have been taught about the ill effects of drug overdose and the odds of withdrawing from drug addiction, yet, nobody seems to care. At home, parents have been doubling their efforts in making their kids understand that nothing good will come out of drug addiction. In like manner, the government has been spending a big chunk of the country’s budget toward fighting drug addiction but the same is in vain.

What has gone wrong? Who is to be blamed for all these? Take a look around you and you will realize how much influence media have in today’s generation. We see them on television, read about them in the papers and talk about them during lunch breaks. Celebrities, rock stars, sports enthusiasts and other prominent figures that have graced our screen are the same people that our children look up to as role models. No wonder, they are into binge drinking, sniffing cocaine and a lot of other intoxicating activities.

Although this has been addressed by coming up with reality shows that focus on addiction and withdrawal from addictive drugs, not much has changed. In fact, the numbers are rising at an alarming state. It has become a part of our ordinary lives. These people could even be our friends, neighbors, classmates and worse of all, our family. Yet, the trend continues. Even if so much has been reported about people getting jailed for drug addiction and hospitalized for attempting to withdraw from drugs, nobody seems to care.

On a separate note, pharmaceutical companies have also caught on with the phenomenon. The market has been flooded with highly powerful stimulants, sleeping aids, stress tablets, pain killers and a lot more. Their advertising efforts are very much effective prompting people to try out these products. Sometimes, people have become slaves to these pills. Once hooked, it is very difficult to break free. In like manner, getting into a drug withdrawal can be very depressing as well as life threatening. But that is how it works if you are in the business especially as lucrative and demanding as a pharmaceutical industry.

Drug addiction is very rampant and this needs to be stopped. It makes one useless and a problem to the society.
