Some questions about writing a book…?
Question by Legend in your own mind!: Some questions about writing a book…?
I’m thinking of writing a book based on my own experiences as a drug addict. I’m a former heroin addict, spent over 5 yrs in treatment and now want to write about my experiences. Would people bother to read it? Should I write in first person or not? I don’t want to use real names for obvious reasons…I don’t want to get sued. This would be a work of fiction based on real and true events.
Another thing..Where or at what point of life would be a good start? Should I begin when i first became addicted or before then, perhaps as a child? I have a lot of my own ideas, but more interested in what you might find interesting. There are times I spent in jails, dope houses, all sorts of nasty places. Would people want to read what it’s really like? I ask because many people have preconceived ideas what addiction is like and many are so far off it simply amazes me. I don’t want to burst peoples bubbles, but some just need them burst.
Thanks.
Yeah, I’m not interested in saving the world or wallowing in self pity. That and $ 1.50 might get me a cup of crappy coffee. I meet many very smart people who took some bad steps and I like to think I’m one of those, but on the same hand there are people who think all junkies are thieves hell bent on ripping everyone off. A lot of people have this notion that treatment is a waste and for some people it is, but not for everyone.. You’ve all given me a lot to think about though.

Yes. I believe you should right a story on your experiences. In the words of Beck, “You can’t right if you can’t relate”.
It’s best to start when you first took the drug. Example, “It all began when…” and then go back to before then, life before then, and transition to your addict years and how it affected you.
I’m sure people will want to read it.
