Is it okay to use “you” in a research paper?

Question by Michelle H: Is it okay to use “you” in a research paper?
I’m writing a research paper on wilderness survival and I need to know if it’s alright if I use the word “you”. For example: “If you ever find yourself alone and lost in the wilderness, the most imperative thing to do is to remain calm.”

Well, it is strongly discouraged to use “you,” since a research paper is written in a very formal fashion. I understand what you want to do, but it is preferable to say “one” or “an indivdual.”
