After meeting this guy, I’ve come to understand that certain people just should not drink. Joe blames his up-bringing for his anger issues. Is there any way to help him see a happier side of life? Or is it just a waste of time.

Unfortunately that depends on him.
Trust me, one of my close relative is not an alcoholic but a heavy drinker. I tried helping her, but since she did not had the willpower to do it, she failed over and over again and got even worse.
She was the same, she had the worst anger issues as well, and would yell through nights.

So I say that depends on him, if he wants to change, and takes it seriously, then he can. If he’s not serious, then its a waste of time. The best you can do here is try to show him the right way, and try to make him think about his situation. Try to show him that if he wont give up drinking he’ll have to live his life alone and sad.

I really hope for the best, and that he will have more will then my relative did.:)
