My parents (especially my mother) are overbearing. How do I get some freedom?

Question by comerciallampshade: My parents (especially my mother) are overbearing. How do I get some freedom?
I’m 16 and can go for my license except for that my driving hrs. aren’t filled up because my mom refuses to let me drive. She doesn’t let me drive with any other adults. She does this so I won’t be able to come and go without requiring a ride from her. She says I can’t go out with my friends over the weekends because weekends are for resting. So I am forbidden to go out. She pressures me to quit sports because when I practice I am away from the house. She tells me to not sleep over at my best friends house (who she has known for years and she trusts her parents/ we don’t party) because she “feels safer when I’m not away from home so she can keep track of me”. Then when I object she keeps me in my room and calls her sister and tells her about me, Is this typical behavior or is 16 too old for this? How do I stop it? When I try to discuss it with her she freaks. When I asked if she needed help in the kitchen she screamed: “You think I’m helpless & need your help!” Please help me!

Tell her that if she loves you, she would let you live and stop treating you like a kid, therefore mortifying you in front of your friends. Tell her that what she is doing makes you ashamed of even calling her your mother.
