Are there some addicts that just don’t respond to 12-step programs?
Question by PortWine: Are there some addicts that just don’t respond to 12-step programs?
Years ago, I used to go to 12-step (SAA) meetings for addiction to Playboy-type videos. I tried a few different groups, and all of them included a lot of garbage that was worse than useless to me. Things like mislead tough love, obvious recovery addiction on the part of some of the leaders of the groups, incorrect attributions and a demand that I find a higher power all drove me away from the program. My sex addiction is a non-issue now, but I’m feeling dependent on alcohol. I may need to get help with my drinking, but I’m not open to many of the views and approaches of 12-step programs and what I’ve seen with therapists (Dr. Drew) that specialize in addiction. Are there alternative approaches, or do I need to shop carefully?

All meeting are different! Try going to some AA meetings and explore. AA is different from a lot of the branch type meetings like SAA. Go to an AA meeting and tell them how you feel about 12 step meetings. Don’t give up until you have tried at least three different AA meetings!
