What happens to peoples sense of loyalty while in rehab?

Question by harryh: What happens to peoples sense of loyalty while in rehab?
I have a friend who got hooked on oxy’s and meth. For the most part he hid it from his family and friends. We (his friends) knew he he did some coke and pot here and there, but we didn’t know about the oxy’s. He got pretty bad and couldn’t hide it/control it any longer. He went to rehab, and came out with a holier than now attitude, and refuses to even speak to his older friends. Some of whom he’s know for over 20 years. These aren’t “drug buddies” these are friends who have been in weddings, been there when kids have been born, been on vacations, always been around for the holidays, etc. I get the fact people want a clean slate, but this is a bit much I think. As foolish as it sounds, it’s almost like the rehab facility got him at his lowest and reprogrammed him to think every part of his previous life had to go. So if your familiar with the system, what’s the deal here?
Kakrine, define clean and sober. We always had normal drinks together, but I never did meth and oxy’s with him-which is what he obviously went in for. After he got out, he told everyone that he wasn’t allowed to have another drink. I assume that’s normal?

Hmm, interesting. I’m not entirely sure. While I was in rehab they just told us to get rid of all our friends that use. But keep close to those that are clean and sober for a more positive influence. It could be that he might associate some of his good past friends with his drug use and he is just trying to avoid everyone all together. I don’t believe the treatment center would of told him to forget everyone all together, I think that this has solely been his decision.

Yes clean and sober means that you aren’t under the influence of any drug or alcohol. When out of rehab, you are not suppose to be around anyone that does so. So if you guys still drink, that may be the reason he doesn’t hang out.
