About my pain medication?

Question by justin a: About my pain medication?
I have a blown out disk in my lower back that well cause extreme pain at times, and with no health insurance I am forced to take pain medication, At the present time I take any where form 1 oxycodone 15 mg to 1 1/2 per day, now I have been taking this medication for about a year and half. 45 per month is how many I get, Now tomorrow I go to see my doctor, What i would like to ask him is if he would up me to about 60 per month, as it is now I don’t get the same pain numbing effect that I got at first, this as I understand is only natural as you body dose build up a tolerance to the drug, However I am just a bit skittish ask perhaps I am shy or just a coward to ask, I know some people don’t have a problem asking but I do. With out this medication I would be unable to do normal day to day task do the my pain. I do get drug tested regularly by my doctor to ensure that I am taking this medication and not abusing it, My question is that if you were in my shoes how would YOU go about ASKING the doctor? Let me give you a bit of back round on the doctor, As I said before he dose drug test me every so often to make sure I am taking the meds and he is extremely liberal when it comes to writing these meds, His office is a walk in clinic that specialize in pain management, however not like some other pain management places that give a ridicules amount of pain meds. He dose also offer a suboxone program to those that my get addicted or just anyone off the street who comes in and needs treatment for addiction. So all in all I think he is a very good but cautious doctor. Now that you have some back round, let me ask Again how would YOU go about ASKING???

I’d let him know that the oxycodone isn’t helping as much as it used to. Ask him if there is another pain medication you could take or if they think that staying on the same one, but increasing the dosage slightly might help.

Asking for advice rather than asking for the increase may be the best way to approach this. He may just give you a higher dosage pill, but that should work as well.
