Question by fieldsofgrace06: I got a letter saying an ethics violation has been filed against me–as a substance abuse counselor. Help!?
It’s a holiday so I can’t get more information. I was fired from that job in early September for no appreciable reason–apparently my boss just really hated me. More than I even thought, it turns out. I have been over the code of ethics and can’t find anything I did wrong, except maybe that after I was fired, I became friends with a former client who also went to my church. She had been discharged long before I was fired even. But it’s not like I had sex with anyone, or exploited anyone. I am no longer a substance abuse counselor and I must say I never want to go through all this again. Now I work for Dept. of Mental Health with little kids. What’s the worst that could happen, sanctions-wise? I was not licensed, just Certified Addictions Counselor–Pending, and it’s not like I’m using that, so they can have it. My fear is that this will somehow come back to bite me in my future career. It’s very scary. Any advice or information is appreciated.

I can see how it would be scary.
The first thing I would do is talk with a good lawyer, especially if you suspect you were just fired over a grudge. The next would be to gather all the records you can in relation to this case.
Good luck.
