What should I do about someone’s addiction to pain medication?
Question by leelee: What should I do about someone’s addiction to pain medication?
I have a loved one who is addicted to pain medicine. I have tried to encourage him to quit and I reassure him I will be there every step he takes going through his with-drawls. I also remind him that it will get you no where and it will shoot your dreams down to nothing. Everyone says ‘oh he will quit when he is ready’ I’m just worried he won’t never be ready. I often watch intervention on tv and I’m scared his addiction will get worse off. He is already to the point where he will call out of work if he does not have any pain medication because he says he can’t work or function without it. This all started with the doctor putting him on percocets for about a year and then taking him off. By that time he was addicted and would not tell the doctor. He no longer has insurance so therefore he buys them from acquaintances or off the streets or where ever I’m not to sure. I also know it is a costly habit. He spends around $ 100- $ 125 weekly on percocets. Please give me some advice on addiction with pain medication and how can I be a good influence to stir him in the right direction. Please be thoughtfull because I feel I have almost tried everything and don’t know what else to do. If you have an addiction with this I would really love to hear your story as well. Thanks alot!

Try to get the doctor to give him the sugar pills that look like pain medicine. The vast majority of addiction is intellectual.
