Why doesn’t God just tell me what He wants and doesn’t want?

Question by Weston: Why doesn’t God just tell me what He wants and doesn’t want?
Never has God told me to do anything or refrain from doing anything. Lots of people have told me what He wants and doesn’t want, but He has remained suspiciously silent. Some folks will point me to the Bible, but even those who place their faith in such a text admit that it was written by men. Additionally, there are competing “holy books” that claim things contrary to the Bible. God has never indicated to me which one I should follow. Even if I limit myself to Christianity, I am confused as to whom I should listen. The Jehovah’s Witnesses tell me that I shouldn’t participate in Halloween (many will claim that outfit is not even truly Christian, though). The Mormons say that I should abstain from caffeine. The Catholics tell me that I can drink alcohol, but I should never use birth control, even in marriage; certain Baptists say the exact opposite of that. So many people are promoting all these different rules without divine confirmation of any of them. I am left to wonder if such interlopers are merely using “God” as an excuse to push their lifestyles on others.

Here’s a thought that more of us would do well to consider: maybe God just wants us to be free and do our own thing. After all, if He is intelligent and powerful enough to create the universe, I can’t see why He would need anything from us. Of course, He may not exist at all, but that is something that many do not want to contemplate. Either way, I’m going to live as I see fit until I receive a communication from Him personally regarding what I should or should not do.
