Writing a book: Drug Withdrawal Symptoms?

Question by ChemicalCobra: Writing a book: Drug Withdrawal Symptoms?
Hey 🙂

I am currently beginning work on a story and was wondering if anyone could help me. My main character is in his late teens and has a drug addiction when he is initially introduced. He joins the army for a short time in an attempt to escape his village (though he doesn’t last long!). While in the army however, he discontinues his drug use. He was taking drugs for no more than a year or so.

Could anyone inform me of a drug (if one exists at all) which causes withdrawal symptoms for a significant amount of time? Perhaps a month or more? They do not necessarily have to be severe. I wanted the characters shift from drug use to be somewhat of a theme at the beginning of the story, however I am only 16 and do not have any experience of drug use myself.

Does anyone have any information that could be useful to my writing? How the road to recovery from drug addiction can affect you physically or mentally? Thank you so much for your time, any answers would be greatly appreciated!
