the current treatments need to be tailored to each patient- because there are many different strains of HIV. they include Atripla, Combivir, and Norvir, as well as many others. they are given in combinations, called cocktails- and can cost as much as $ 618, 900 for a lifetime supply for one patient, with a monthly cost of between $ 2100 and $ 4700, depending on the treatment begins.

the biggest problem with HIV in africa is cultural: it is impossible to stop the spread of the virus in an area where education is low, women are often uneducated, breastfeeding is expected, and medical treatment is below standard. no matter how well you treat one patient, if she feeds her infant breast milk then you have another patient to treat- and so on. sadly, not breastfeeding (even when infected) is so strongly looked down upon that women who make this choice can be ostracized from their societies.

there are many organizations that are devoting time and resources to education about HIV in africa- WHO is just one of them. until education becomes more common and social expectations of women change, HIV will continue be a major problem.
